Today was the third day of Encampment, the cadets rose early and marched out to their first (and favorite...) activity of the day PT!! HOO-YAH!! Following PT they all enjoyed a hearty breakfast, sat through some classroom instruction and then headed out to the Land Navigation Course to try out their “compass skills.”
The cadets were divided into six “chalks” (teams), taught how to use a compass, and given a list of instructions. They were then set upon their course to put into practice those skills they had just learned. After the Land Navigation Course, the cadets had lunch and inspection prep. The rest of the afternoon consisted of classes, drill, and another inspection prep. Dinner preceded the final activities of the day, formation and inspections.
It has been a long day, and all the cadets (and seniors) are ready to “hit the sack.”
Goodnight from Camp Ripley.

NOTE: We did experience some severe weather this afternoon, however the staff was prepared for just such an event. The cadets were quickly & efficiently marshaled into their designated severe weather shelter(s) in accordance with our pre-arranged safety plan and remained with their flight staff until the “All Clear” was sounded by Camp Ripley.
Summary of Day-1
Today was a very long day for both the "Basics" as well as the cadet staff. Many cadets (and parents) traveled long distances to get to Camp Ripley by noon and begin the check in process.
It was a strenuous day, the weather was warm and the air was thick with humidity. None the less, our fearless cadets charged right in and took it all in stride, you can be proud of each and every one of them.
The afternoon consisted primarily of basic drill movements along with some classroom training on the history and the mission of the CAP.
So, after a long, warm sticky day and a fantastic supper, the cadets were ready for their first daily de-brief with their flight staff and TAC officers, followed by shower call and then off to bed.
Tomorrow promises to be another warm, fun filled day.
